This month in Manjaro (May 2022)

This is my periodic posts on whats going on in Manjaro land.

It's a small collection of notable changes, updates and community news in and for the Manjaro community.

As I am a Manjaro ARM developer, some of the information will probably be ARM-biased.

See this as a Manjaro Podcast, but in written form.

Week 1

Dav1d updated to 1.0.0

An update to the AV1 codec library dav1d to 1.0.0, made some applications not work anymore. This includes the popular Media Player Kodi.

Orange Pi 3 LTS development images available

This week also marked the release of our first working Orange Pi 3 LTS ( opi3-lts ). They can be found on our Github. Disclaimer: These are still development images. Everything seems to work, except Wifi and Bluetooth.

Week 2

New stable update with a couple of issues

This week a new stable update was pushed to the x64 folks. It had a couple of minor issues, mainly a KDE library dependency no longer needed and was pushed into the AUR instead. Normally not an issue, but this package did not compile from the AUR, so many KDE people where not able to update without doing some dependency juggling.

Week 3

Packages not built for stable, found in stable

Early this week, a couple of packages was fast-forwarded to stable branch, which is usually not an issue. But this time there was an updated toolchain in the unstable branch, which the packages are built against, so once they hit stable branch, they no longer launched. These packages included Firefox 100.0.1 and an updated MangoHud.

Odroid M1 support in Manjaro ARM

This week the Manjaro ARM devs got their Odroid M1 development boards from Hardkernel. And because of the work being done for other rk356x boards, like the Quartz64, the team had working Manjaro images for the Odroid M1 available the day after they received the device.

Week 4

Kernel 5.18 released

Linus Torvalds released kernel 5.18.0 this week, which brings in many improvements to many subsystems. 5.18.0 was made available in Unstable quickly after its release and will be included in a Stable branch near you soon.

New Pinephone factory images

There is a new batch of Pinephones Pinephone Pros and even Pinebook Pros going out soon, so we have been hard at work created new and updated factory images to be shipped with them.

New toolchain coming to ARM

Arch Linux ARM, which is the base of Manjaro ARM, is currently in the process of updating the GCC based toolchain. This means new versions of glibc, binutils and gcc are being included. This does however mean that most of this week, there has been no updates in Unstable branch, because Arch Linux ARM is still rebuilding packages with the new toolchain. Expect a huge update to unstable, once Arch Linux ARM has finished their rebuilds.
